Big Rock Library offers annual library cards at a very reasonable cost.
Because the Big Rock Historical Society is the library’s governing body, we are considered a “special” library. That means we are not tax-supported like public libraries are and we can’t offer “free” cards.
To obtain a library card, bring identification with payment as cash or check payable to Big Rock Historical Society.
Your library card is good for admission or special discounts at participating Chicago area cultural destinations. Use your library card to obtain one pass per week per household.
The visitor will find a variety of Natural History and Native American displays in the upper floor of the library.
Big Rock Library acknowledges the Native Americans who inhabited this property before the 1830s. We respect and honor that heritage with displays of Native American artifacts and programming about the Native community.

- Plowing Match Book Sale
While attending Plowing Match, don’t forget to visit the Big Rock Library’s Big Book Sale! Lots of titles to choose from and you won’t beat the prices! Hardcover – $1.00, paperback- 50 cents, mass market paperbacks- 25 cents. Kids’ books are also 25 cents. Audiobooks & DVDs- 50 cents. CDs -25 cents. Jigsaw puzzles- 50 cents-$1.00. Look for the tent behind the library; we also have more books in the basement sale room. Come over and browse!
- Colonial Coins
In the early days of our country’s history, the primary type of currency was in the form of coins. Richard Shimkus, an avid coin collector here in Big Rock, will be at the library on March 19th at 2:00 PM to discuss the first coinage of the Colonies from 1652 to 1787.
He’ll also talk about Coinage used by the Colonies prior to their own minting of coins.
For anyone interested in money and history, this presentation should offer a fascinating look at how currency evolved during the early days of our country.
